WELLE TO SMITH: I WILL NOT APOLOGIZE AND I CALL ON YOU TO RETIRE
(Eatontown) Late Wednesday night, the Smith campaign put out a statement about exchanges that happened during an in-studio, closed-set debate at News12 that has not been yet aired.
“I absolutely called Smith’s regressive, anti-woman, anti-LGBTQ agenda perverse,” said Josh Welle, candidate for New Jersey’s 4th Congressional district. “Congressman, I’d encourage you to refer to the definition of perverse: showing a deliberate and obstinate desire to behave in a way that is unreasonable or unacceptable, often in spite of the consequences. It is unacceptable for an elected official to make a crusade of limiting the rights of anyone because of their gender or sexual orientation. This district is inclusive, accepting, and deserves better. This is not the behavior of a Representative and I call on Chris Smith to join his 23 other colleagues who have decided they were not right for their districts and retire.”
“Mr. Smith loves to refer to his ratings and statistics for all of his ‘accomplishments’ over the past, nearly 4 decades he’s worked in Congress. With his love of ratings, I would like to refer the voters of New Jersey’s 4th district to his 0% rating with the Human Rights Campaign, his 5% rating with American Civil Liberties Union, his 0% rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL,” said Aubrey Fink, Communications Director for the Welle campaign.
To date, Representative Smith has continued to avoid the questions and concerns of the citizens in his district. He continues to preach about his constituent services, but has not held a town hall, open to all residents of NJ-4, in 25 years. This debate is one of the only appearances the Congressman has made, and it was in the safety of a TV studio without having to actually face his constituents. The actual debate, which has not yet aired, will be shown on News 12 on Friday, October 19th at 9pm and both Saturday, October 20th and Sunday October 21st at 10am, 12:30pm, and 4:30pm.
The second debate will be held tonight at Brookdale at 7pm. When Mr. Welle asked Mr. Smith if he would be attending, the Congressman said he would not. This candidate forum, being sponsored by the nonpartisan League of Women Voters, will be the only debate held in front of a live audience and Mr. Welle will be joined by other candidates on the ballot. The final debate will be sponsored by the Asbury Park Press and will take place on Thursday, October 25th. This editorial board will be broadcast live on the APP Facebook page at 11am.
Josh Welle puts country over party. He is an Annapolis graduate, Afghanistan veteran, Commander in the Navy Reserve, and former founder of a technology company. He was raised in Wall Township and is the Democratic candidate for New Jersey’s 4th Congressional District competing to unseat 37-year incumbent Chris Smith. He lives with his wife, Angela, in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
